Romance, Hollywood style 24 Jul 2008
Romance, Hollywood Style Wouldn’t it be great if life was just like the movies? There’s no reason why your own life can’t be full of such unforgettable moments, with you and your man in the starring roles. We’ve compiled a list of our favourite romantic movie moments, along with some advice on how you can take recreate them in real life!

1. Ghost
Molly (Demi Moore) and Sam (Patrick Swayze) engage in a somewhat failed tandem pottery session, caressing clay to the strains of the Righteous Brother’s Unchained Melody. It’s a deeply romantic scene that perfectly demonstrates the young couple’s intense physical and emotional passion for one another. This scene is all about the power of the human touch. Get closer to your partner with sensuous massage oils or edible powder. Spice things up with a few naughty games!

We recommend: massage therapy kit; honey dust; earthly delight pleasure box; romantic naughty weekender kit; the romantic gift set; 52 weeks of romance; 52 weeks of naughty nights; bedside box gift set; sensual treasure trove; naughty weekender kit; decision dice

2. Notting Hill
Hollywood megastar Anna (Julia Roberts) walks into William’s (Hugh Grant’s) book store bearing a gift, an original piece of art that William loves, and says “I’m just a girl standing in front of a boy asking him to love her.” America’s sweetheart lays her soul completely bear for an ordinary English bookseller – her sincerity and apprehension is heartbreakingly palpable. We may not all have the movie star budget to splash out on priceless art, but like Anna, we can show how much we care by selecting stunning art pieces that perfectly reflect his tastes.

We recommend: new yorker crystal candle holders; the thinking manancient cities vase; sand-blasted Egyptian artefact; under the sahara sun vase; the emperor’s tale vase; set of musicians jamming; flavours of the orient vase; crystal vase

3. An Officer and a Gentleman
In a shining white uniform, newly graduated Naval Officer Zack (Richard Gere) strides up to Paula (Debra Winger) at the factory where she works and in front of all her colleagues lifts her into his arms to the uplifting chorus of Joe Cocker’s ‘Up Where We Belong”, carrying her out of her mundane existence and to a bright future together. It’s doubtful his boss (or your chiropractor) would appreciate it if you swept into his office and attempted to carry him off. Instead, surprise him when he gets home from work by creating a romantic mood – candlelight, rose petals, a bubbling bath. An unexpected break in routine will lift you both up to where you belong!

We recommend: bed of roses; special edition bed of roses gift set; organic gentlemen’s nightbox; savannah sunrise candles

4. Sideways Alexander Payne, 2004
Miles (Paul Giamatti) and Maya (Virginia Madsen) are sipping a couple of glasses of red late at night, sharing intimacies about their mutual passion for wine. Miles gives an impassioned speech about the pinot grape, and it becomes clear that he’s talking about himself. “It’s a hard grape to grow. It’s thin-skinned, temperamental,” he says. “Pinot needs constant care and attention.” He suddenly realizes that Maya is falling for him, as she lays her hand on his and smiles. Appreciating the finer things in life together is a fantastic way to relax and reconnect. Take a leaf (or grape vine) out of Miles and Maya’s book and indulge in a fine wine or champagne. Make it that bit more special by having a picnic!

We recommend: the wine connoisseur’s set; les trios wine bottle stoppers; leather champagne and goblet holder; Windsor picnic backpack

5. Jerry Maguire
Sports agent Jerry (Tom Cruise) finally realizes that the faithful and selfless Dorothy (Rene Zellweger) is the only woman he needs. Rushing to her home he passionately declares “You… complete… me….” and she emotionally responds “You had me at hello!”. Two unforgettable, constantly quoted lines that have rightfully secured Cameron Crowe’s feelgood drama a shining spot in cinematic history. Sincerely telling someone exactly how you feel can be the sexiest and most endearing gesture of all. Emphasize your intentions with adorable love tokens that can be treasured forever.

We recommend: I love you pebbles; yours box; iou tokens; secret heart

6. Pretty Woman
With their ‘business arrangement’ over, hooker-with-a-heart Vivian (Julia Roberts) and businessman Edward (Richard Gere) have seemingly gone their separate ways. As Vivian gets ready to leave town, we feel her resigned sadness for a love that didn’t work out. But it’s not over yet… like a modern day Prince Charming Edward pulls up in a limo outside her apartment, bearing a bouquet of beautiful flowers and climbs the fire escape to sweep the urban Cinderella off her feet. Swoon! Sweep him off his feet by treating him to a romantic escape. Maybe you’d like to rise to the heavens in a hot air balloon or indulge your fairy tale fantasies with a sexy photo session?

We recommend: balloon flight for two; deluxe short break; jet set day; national trust day out for two

7. Sleepless in Seattle
After 100 minutes of near misses, lovelorn Sam (Tom Hanks) finally comes face to face with the only woman in the world for him, Annie (Meg Ryan), on top of the Empire State Building. Although it’s the first time they’ve ever met, they just can’t stop looking at each other, as they hold hands and get on the elevator with Sam’s son Jonah, ready to begin the rest of their lives together… The glittering skyline of New York provided a breathtaking backdrop for Sam and Annie’s long-awaited encounter – would it have been awe-inspiring minus the famous metropolitan setting? Likewise, ascending great heights in London, another world-class capital, will undoubtedly inject passion into your own relationship!

We recommend: classic lunch cruise and london-eye trip; cupid’s london eye exclusive

8. Romancing the Stone
Joan (Kathleen Turner) begins the film as a romance novelist who writes about thrilling adventures, swashbuckling heroes and fearless heroines. In time though, she is plunged into her very own epic, with her very own swashbuckler, John (Michael Douglas). After triumphing over numerous adversities, Joan is back home, writing up her latest adventure, but missing John who is still questing for El Corazon, a priceless gem. Returning home one day, she finds John waiting for her in a sailboat named for her most popular romantic heroine, The Angelina. They kiss on the deck as the boat slides down the streets of New York City. Joan embarks on an adventure and in the process finds romance. Sharing adrenaline-filled experiences can bring a couple together like nothing else, so go on and take a walk on the wild side!

We recommend: white water rafting for two; extreme dreams collection; bungee jumping for two; tandem skydive; harness sphereing for two; karting for two; rafting for two

9. Chocolat
With her inviting chocolate shop and irresistible treats, Vianne (Juliette Binoche) changes a repressed French village forever (and for the better). She has a gift for knowing any person’s favourite chocolate, except in the case of her mysterious Irish gypsy lover, Roux (Johnny Depp). At the end of the film, he returns to her and she offers him a hot chocolate. He smiles and tells her that she has finally guessed correctly. Mmm, what could be more delicious than handmade chocolate and Johnny Depp? Unfortunately we can’t provide the latter, but we do have plenty of mouth-watering and more-ish luxury chocolate…a proven aphrodisiac, so get seductive!

We recommend: chocolate and grand marnier cake; chocolate making workshop for two

10. Brief Encounter
After finally deciding to end their unconsummated affair, Laura (Celia Johnson) and Alec (Trevor) are sadly waiting for Alec’s train and their final goodbye. Laura’s talkative friend unexpectedly joins them, robbing the pair of their much longed for passionate farewell. As Alec boards his train and pulls away, Laura suddenly dashes forward, her face reflecting her struggle to let go of him and return home. The train station and old fashioned trains provide an atmospheric setting for Laura and Alec’s tentative affair. Experience your own train romance by taking a ride on the famous Orient Express – make sure that neither of you is left on the platform!

We recommend: orient express British Pullman; orient express northern belle; fine lunch on the orient express
