During a recent Hudson Valley Renegades baseball game in the US, generous spectators brought an array of gifts to send to soldiers.
Encouraged by the local Semper Fi chapter, fans of the team brought in their offerings and were handed a mini, battery-powered fan in return, the Poughkeepsie Journal reports.
Speaking about her involvement with the group - which has sent hundreds of packages to Iraq and Afghanistan - Joanne Peterson said: "It has allowed me to become personally involved with others who are in the same situation, to be able to help, not just my son but all the troops over there."
Recently, paratrooper Neil Smith, who is stationed in Afghanistan, wrote to a UK bakery which had sent him and some of his colleagues gift packages to express his gratitude.
He said: "Can I personally thank your staff and customers for their very kind gesture of parcels for the troops," the Essex Echo reported.
