The practice of handing over presents is not something that is restricted to humankind, it has been suggested.
According to scientists form the Yerkes Research Centre at Emory University in Atlanta, monkeys also hand gifts to those close to them.
The researchers suggested that, when given the opportunity, capuchins consistently opted to share food with their fellow tree-dwellers.
"Capuchin monkeys spontaneously share food in both nature and captivity and commonly sit next to each other while eating," the scientists stated.
In other animal-related gift news, an elephant named Hydari was treated to an edible offering earlier this year when keepers at the Hogle Zoo in Utah gave her a birthday cake in honour of her 48th birthday, the Salt Lake Tribune reported.
The giant animal is now thought to be the oldest African elephant to be living in a US zoo following the death of a fellow pachyderm named Petal at the Philadelphia Zoo.
